DESCRIPTION
Comments cards are a simple and low-cost way for service users to write down and post their thoughts and/or feedback.
WATER/ AGRICULTURE EXAMPLE
Using comment cards (aka the yellow sticky note technique) can be useful for your initial work:
1. For the first stakeholder engagement
2. To define expectations for the entire design process of a landscape water management solution
3. To collect various ideas
as well as in the stages of work or final work:
1. When assessing the developed solutions.
2. When mapping (sticking on the map) tasks
3. When assessing the developed activities
HOW TO USE IT ONLINE
Use the Jamboard, Whiteboard or similar e-tool
RESOURCES NEEDED
Time to do: minimal
Staff: needed to set up and maintenance
Equipment: Flipchart, pens, colour cards or post it stickers, whiteboards or wall, box (optional)
SUITABLE FOR
large and small groups
HOW TO DO IT
- The facilitator writes down the question (formulate problems also as a question) as a heading and makes sure that it is clear to everyone.
- All participants get the same number of cards of the same colour (3 to 5 cards) and write down their contribution (only 1 thought per card, capitalize, maximum 3 lines per card (better only 2)).
- If there is a risk that the participants will be influenced when they see who contributed what (conflict situations, hierarchical influences), the contributions should be hidden and the facilitator collects the cards in a box.
- The cards should be read aloud when they are pinned to the whiteboard/ wall. Otherwise, the participants can pin the cards themselves and explain with a sentence (short!) what is meant by it.
ADVANTAGES
- A straightforward way to have an input on actual topics, ideas, solutions
- Has the potential to gain feedback from a large number of people
- Can be anonymous if posting in a box
CHALLENGIES
- Someone must be responsible for ensuring pens and cards are replenished and remain available, as well as for general tidiness.
- The follow up is important – before doing this, think about the aim of the action.
